Rusty, the Zen master of the canine kingdom. A creature of serene composure and insouciant grace, he glides through life with a nonchalant air that is both enviable and endearing. For this distinguished elderly gentleman of the canine persuasion, the art of living is simply to be in the moment and savour whatever delights come his way.

Do not be deceived by his years, for Rusty is no ordinary pup. He has been a resident of Steve’s household for a prodigious thirteen years, and in that time, has developed quite the personality.

Rusty’s beginnings are quite extraordinary, you see. One day, he simply followed Steve home, as if he knew that he had found his forever abode. Steve had been out for a run, and Rusty, a mere puppy at the time, ran with him all the way back to his doorstep. Steve, being the kind-hearted soul that he is, could not bring himself to send Rusty back to the streets, and thus the little pup became a part of the family. It’s truly remarkable how Rusty found his way into Steve’s life, and it just goes to show that sometimes, the things that are meant to be just fall into place.

Rusty is another shining example of how making a life is more important than being born into one. He’s a self-made dog, if you will, and that’s something to be admired.

With his impeccable sense of protocol, Rusty is a true gentleman among dogs. He is not one to be swayed by the fawning attentions of just any old Joe Schmoe, but rather,  he is selective in his affections, requiring that one earn his trust and acceptance before he will deign to associate. Much like an old sherry-soaked Earl from a Wodehouse novel, Rusty requires a certain level of decorum and etiquette before he’ll deign to associate with you. He’s not the type of dog that will wag his tail at anyone who comes his way, rather, he will only open up to those who have earned his trust. But once you have won Rusty’s approval, you will find that he is a right friendly chap, with a beautiful way of communicating that is as clear and direct as it is charming..

When Rusty wants to go for a walk, he’ll make sure you know about it!

Indeed, when Rusty wants to go for a walk, he makes it perfectly clear, with a subtle raising of his head, as if to say, “Excuse me, Steve, I believe it’s time for our walk.” And if Steve should be slow to take the hint, Rusty will unfold himself in his cot and sit like the Sphinx, a silent but insistent reminder that a stroll is in order. It’s quite comical to watch, really, and you can’t help but smile at Rusty’s determination.

Rusty communicates with Steve in a way that can only be described as “beautiful”. He has his own way of expressing himself, whether it’s enquiring about his rusk or politely requesting a walk, Rusty is always clear and direct in his messaging. He’s not one for beating around the bush, and you’ll never have to wonder what he’s thinking or feeling. It’s quite refreshing, really. Steve says that Rusty has a way of communicating that is so clear and precise, that it’s almost like he can understand every word Rusty says.

Content to simply be in the moment and enjoy whatever comes his way, Rusty is a loyal, Zen-like companion with a penchant for protocol and a beautiful way of communicating. I daresay, he’s a dog of a different breed entirely, one that followed his destiny and found his way into a loving home.
